How to build your personal brand? Seven simple steps

Visibility in the industry, better position in the job market, an extensive professional network – these are but a few of the benefits of a strong personal brand. Take care of your image – self-branding will propel your career development. How to do it? We have some tips for you!

Check what they’re saying about you

Do you want to know how others perceive you? Enter your name in the browser (in incognito mode) and look at the search results. What does Google tell you on the first results page and on the following pages? Now you know what your image on the web is. Is it in line with you true self or the image you want to present? If not – there’s a lot of work to be done, but the good news is that anything is possible. You only need to put some time and effort into it.

Review your image

Think about what image you want to present to others on the web. What is important to you, what values do you want to communicate and how do you want to stand out? When you know how you want others to perceive you and you compare it to what others think of you – you will know what you need to improve.

Awareness is key

Do your own SWOT analysis. What for? It will allow you to learn about your strengths and weaknesses, as well as the possibilities and risks related to self-branding. This exercise, which you might remember from college, is fast, simple and very beneficial. You can share your SWOT analysis with friends and family. Perhaps they can come up with some traits that you missed?

When building a personal brand, you need to know who your target audience are. Think about the recipient of your content, create a persona (portrait) of your ideal recipient and communicate consistently with your designated groups.

Find your niche

You know very well that nowadays everyone and their mother have an account on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn. There is no shortage of experts on everything. Do not follow in their footsteps. Find a niche, where you may become an expert, and settle in with your image there. Choose one of the communication channels to be your main one and tend to it. Whether it is a blog, podcast or YouTube channel, do your best to perfect it and make it reflect your image.

Analyze your competition

Do some good research and see who else is promoting themselves in the same industry. Get to know your competition and find at least three traits that make you stand out. Your unique traits are your biggest advantage. If your skills are common and you are easy to replace in your area – maybe it might be a good idea to change careers?

Express your thoughts

Personal brand means, above all others, being yourself. Expressing your thoughts, having the skills to argue your case, sticking to the set path and creating your unique style – all of this builds trust and attracts others. What potential clients and recipients value the most is genuineness.

If you want to build your personal brand, your actions in every communication channel need to be consistent. You may think about a graphical theme, slogan or graphic identification. Think it through. A unique style is key. To maintain it, create a schedule and stick to it. Monitor information about you on the web. Measure results and optimize them so that your personal brand gets more and more visible with each passing year.
