You’ve been working from home for a few weeks already, but you’re still not used to such form of work? No surprise there. Your partner is trying to talk to you all the time, children are grumbling and your dog is waiting for you to go for a walk with it since morning… Feeling as though time is flying by too fast? Take it easy. Organize your telework and enjoy the home office.
Here are some rules for remote work that will help you complete your duties and maintain a good work-life balance.
Set your working hours
Decide when you want to work. In the office, you’re required to start and finish working at certain times. Nothing stops you from setting such times when working at home. Determine when you will be available for your coworkers. Record your working hours in your team’s calendar or communicate those in an e-mail or during a video conference.

Remember to inform your family or housemates at what times you will be working. Set times for meals, talks, playing or walking the dog. Common rules will allow you to plan your day according to your needs.
Think about your workplace
Prepare your workplace. No, the couch in front of the TV is not the perfect place to work. A mini office in a separate room, where no one will bother you, will work better. Designating a separate space for your work will be a sign to your family or housemates that you are not to be disturbed. This will allow you to get the job done faster.
Do not start your work in bed just to log onto the company messenger or check the most important e-mails. Get up, get dressed, eat breakfast and only then start working. No one expects you to wear perfect make-up or have a great hairdo, let alone wear a suit. However, it would be better for you to prepare yourself for work and not spend the whole day in your pajamas.
Prepare a list
The secret to remote work is good organization. That is why you should draft a to do list for the day. You can do it the old-fashioned way, with a sheet of paper, or use one of the time-tracking tools, such as Slack, Asana, Trello or ToDoIst. Estimate the amount of time needed for each task and start working. Start from the most important and most difficult tasks. When you’ve managed to complete a task – check it off the list.
If your work doesn’t require you to be online – log out of all social media and messengers. Friends can send you the latest news when you least expect them to. Then you start browsing the Internet or answering them, the next hour flies by and your work is still not done. It needs to stop. Focus on your work and attend to your private affairs in the evening.

It’s up to you whether your work will be productive or not. Do not break your own rules. Start and finish working at fixed times. Take breaks. Remember that rest stimulates your brain and allows your eyes to rest from working long hours at the monitor. Do not forget to relax when you finish working.
