Promotion – and What Next?

Promotion – and What Next?

Promotion involves a higher salary, but also more obligations and greater responsibility. Some dream about it, others would rather avoid it. How to prepare for promotion and become comfortable in the new position?

– Our observations show that an increasing number of managers use coworking spaces. Remote work and tools used for it are so popular that remote team management ceased to be a problem – claims Marta Kamińska from Solutions.Rent

Implementation

Even though you aren’t changing the company or department, you will experience a huge breakthrough. A new position entails different roles and responsibilities. Firstly, give yourself time to learn the rules and get to know more about your new role. Talking to your supervisors and asking for onboarding is a good idea. Regular meetings at which you summarize previous activities and plan further steps will be very helpful, especially during your first months. A clear action plan and a list of tasks will also come in handy.

Manager position

If you have been promoted to a manager position, your relations with co-workers will change. From now on, you are no longer colleagues at the same hierarchy level. This may (but doesn’t have to) involve some difficulties. How to prevent possible tensions and uncomfortable situations?

  • Don’t swagger only because of your position change.
  • Be consistent and fair, notwithstanding private relations.
  • Talk to your team about mutual expectations and mode of work. Explain your position and listen to what they have to say. This will help to resolve any doubts and clarify cooperation rules from the very beginning.

If you don’t have much experience with team management, ask your supervisor to provide you with a course or training. Apart from that, read professional blogs and journals and ask more experienced colleagues for advice. Managerial positions require soft skills. Some of them include providing and receiving feedback and strengthening motivation. Develop them equally with other competencies.

Another level of accountability

Some people dream about promotion and it is one of the reasons for choosing a given company. However, it should be noted that not everyone wants it.

The very first thing you should do is talk to your supervisor and tell them about your goals, motivators and concept for your career. Maybe you would prefer to grow as a specialist and broaden your knowledge in a particular field instead of taking up a managerial position? If you value work-life balance and would like to keep your career peaceful, promotion probably wouldn’t be for you. Don’t be afraid to talk about your needs and refuse to change your position if you are not interested.

Most importantly, remember that you may face some difficulties at the beginning. Each change requires commitment, learning and developing your own methods, and all of these require time and experience. Don’t worry if you cannot perform all your tasks perfectly from the moment you sign the contract.
